Hip Surgery Hope From New Surgical Technique

More than 193,000 total hip replacements are performed each year in the U.S. About 10-percent of those implants will require a revision. Now, a technique borrowed from cancer survivors is giving new hope to those in the most critical situations. Robyn Haines has your Healthy Living.

Walking is something Marci Ybarra must work at after a staph infection ate away her hip cartilage and part of her pelvic bone 26 years ago. She’s faced a long road to recovery.

Her hip dislocated 42 times in her sleep, sending her to the emergency room. Then — something no doctor had seen before. “I had a vaginal fistula. Nobody’s ever had that in the world either. That’s where I don’t mean to sound gross, but one of the pins came loose and went through my vagina wall.”

Marci was then referred to Doctor Henry Finn of the Chicago Center for Orthopedics at Weiss Memorial Hospital. Read more…

Report: More than 100 million suffer lasting pain

WASHINGTON (AP) A new report finds at least 116 million U.S. adults experience long-lasting pain the kind that lingers for weeks to months. Too often, they feel stigma rather than relief from a health care system poorly prepared to treat them.The Institute of Medicine report shows chronic pain costs the nation even more than heart disease in medical bills, sick days and lost productivity.The report calls effective pain management a moral imperative, and urges a series of steps to transform the field.Barriers include health workers not properly trained to handle pain, and insurance that doesn’t cover complex care. Law enforcement’s fight against abuse of narcotic painkillers plays a role, too, but the report found that those medicines are safe and effective for the right patient. Read more…

Common Gene Mutation Found In Ovarian Cancer Tumors

Scientists have found a common gene mutation in ovarian cancer tumors.

The finding may eventually lead to tests aimed at faster diagnosis. Ovarian cancer kills nearly 14,000 women in the U.S. each year. Its the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women.

CBS2′s Serene Branson Teams Up With National Headache Foundation

 — CBS2’s Serene Branson is teaming up with the National Headache Foundation to launch “More Than Just A Headache.”

The campaign, which is kicking off during National Migraine Awareness Month, aims to educate the public and provide valuable resources to millions of migraine patients across the country.

Viewers across the globe witnessed Branson’s medical emergency – a complex migraine – live on TV during the stations newscast following the Grammy Awards in February.

Branson, an Emmy award-winning reporter, was doing her live shot outside Staples Center when her words became incoherent and she exhibited symptoms of a severe medical condition.
