CDC Study Finds 58% Of Public Pools Tested Positive For E.Coli

Many parents probably remember that popular primer on bodily functions called Everybody Poops.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning that human feces are found in more than half of public swimming pools, confirming that E.coli is in 58 percent of samples tested from pool filters.

People, when they swim, obviously their whole body goes in the water, so anything that is on their bodies is likely to end up in the water, says Dr. Ronald Voorhees, the acting director of the Allegheny County Health Department.

Chlorine, the primary pool disinfectant, should handle most microbes.

But some E.coli, which can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, can be stubborn if chlorine levels are not adequate.

So anybody thats had diarrhea recently, until they are over it, they should not use a pool,” Dr. V

Fluoride Reduces The Ability Of Decay-Causing Bacteria To Stick

In an advance toward solving a 50-year-old mystery, scientists are reporting new evidence on how the fluoride in drinking water, toothpastes, mouth rinses and other oral-care products prevents tooth decay. Their report appears in the ACS journal Langumir.

Karin Jacobs and colleagues explain that despite a half-century of scientific research, controversy still exists over exactly how fluoride compounds reduce the risk of tooth decay. That research established long ago that fluoride helps to harden the enamel coating that protects teeth from the acid produced by decay-causing bacteria. Newer studies already found that fluoride penetrates into and hardens a much thinner layer of enamel than previously believed, lending credence to other theories about how fluoride works.

The report describes new evidence that fluoride also works by impacting the adhesion force of bacteria that stick to the teeth and produce the acid that causes cavities. Read more…

Medicare Essential: An Option To Promote Better Care And Curb Spending Growth

We describe a new option we call Medicare Essential, which would combine Medicare’s hospital, physician, and prescription drug coverage into an integrated benefit with an annual limit on out-of-pocket expenses for covered benefits. Cost sharing would be reduced for enrollees who seek care from high-quality low-cost providers. Out-of-pocket savings from lower premiums and health care costs for a Medicare Essential enrollee could be $173 per month, compared to what an enrollee would pay with traditional Medicare, prescription drug and private supplemental coverage. Financed by a budget-neutral premium, we estimate that this new plan choice could reduce total health spending relative to current projections by $180 billion and reduce employer retiree spending by $90 billion during 2014–23. With that in mind here are some things that might be worth keeping in mind when it comes time to make the decision.

Setting – This is where most people decide to start their search. It goes without saying that there will be a radius from your home in which your nursery will have to fall, and factors such as the type of transport available will figure heavily as to how big this area is. Most parents prefer to be close to the pre-school so that in the case of any emergency they can react quickly, but ease of day-to-day travel arrangements should factor just as high.

Staff – Don’t forget that nursery isn’t all about play – the habits of learning have to be introduced at this crucial stage. Try to ge
