Where Does WPAHS Go From Here?

For many who have followed this dance between the local healthcare giants it sometimes seems like we just keep going around in circles.

But Fridays announcement does carry some risks for those served by West Penn Allegheny even if that risk is not yet measurable.

Even after West Penn Allegheny announced they had cancelled their agreement with Highmark, helicopters still took off from the hospital just business as usual for doctors, nurses, and others who serve patients in this region including newly recruited personnel.

These are outstanding clinical leaders who are dedicated to the patients here at the West Penn Allegheny Health System, says Dr. Keith Ghezzi, the interim president of West Penn Allegheny, and we have received no indication that they intend to change their plans.

At least in the short term, nobody thinks the announcement will impact those served by West Penn Allegheny.

Could the Olympics Decrease our Nation`s Obesity?

Every week it seems these days, there is a story in the media highlighting the ever-growing problem of obesity. As people have moved into comfortably seated office jobs and eat an increasingly homogenised diet, the problems of excessive weight gain are in the public eye like never before.

What would help tackle the problem is more widespread exercise. Not enough people are active enough anymore to stay properly healthy and altering behaviour remains difficult. This is where the recent Olympic Games held in London might be able to help.

Hearts and Minds

There has been much talk of an ‘Olympic Legacy’, as though this was something tangible and measurable, like railway tracks or advertising revenue. The greatest legacy that the Games could leave, though, might well be in people’s hearts and minds.
